If you are ADHD, autistic or otherwise neurodivergent, traditional organising advice might never have worked for you. This is not a personal failing. Most organising systems are designed for neurotypical brains. You deserve systems that match how your brain works.
Here are some reasons your home may feel chaotic and what genuinely helps.
1. Out of sight often means out of mind
If you cannot see something, it effectively disappears. This makes cupboards and storage spaces difficult.
What helps:Use open storage, clear containers and visible cues.
2. Decision making is exhausting
ADHD and other neurodivergent brains burn through decisions quickly, especially emotional ones. This is neurological, not laziness.
What helps:Create a Not Today pile to remove pressure in the moment.
3. Traditional routines do not fit your energy pattern
Some days you have endless energy and other days you have none. This is normal.
What helps:Use short reset points instead of rigid routines.
4. Emotional connection to items can be stronger
Objects often carry identity, memory or safety. Letting go takes time.
What helps:Work with someone who understands trauma informed support and emotional regulation.
Your home can support you without looking perfect. You deserve systems that are kind to your nervous system.
